Samudra Manthan - There are many stories prevalent in the mythology of Hinduism.

But the story of the churning of the ocean by the gods and the demons is the most famous.

It is said that the ocean was churned by tying the Mandar mountain to Sheshnag and in that churning, many such things were received from the ocean, which were very priceless. One of the things obtained from the churning was nectar, due to which the Devasura war took place between the gods and the demons, and with the help of Lord Vishnu, the gods were able to win this war by getting the nectar.

But do you know how the thought of churning the ocean came to the mind of the gods? There is an interesting story behind this whole incident, which we will tell you today.

According to a legend of Vishnu Purana, once Devraj Indra was returning from one of his travels to Baikunth Lok and at the same time Durvasa Rishi was going out of Baikunth Lok. When Durvasa sage saw Indra Dev sitting in Airavat elephant, he got confused that the person sitting in elephant is Trilokapati Lord Vishnu. Seeing this illusion as true, Durvasa sage presented Indra a garland of flowers, but Devraj Indra, immersed in his wealth and splendor, threw the garland on the head of his elephant Airavat and the elephant Airavat also shook his head and threw that garland on the ground. But it was dropped due to which the garland got crushed under Airavat's feet.

When Durvasa Rishi saw this action of Indra, he became angry. He not only considered himself an insult to this behavior by Indra, but also considered it an insult to Goddess Lakshmi.

After this insult done by Indra, Rishi Durvasa cursed Indra to be dear. Shortly after the curse given by the sage, all the splendor of Indra fell into the sea and he was taken away from heaven after losing the battle with the demons.

Disturbed by this condition, all the gods reached Lord Vishnu along with Indradev and asked the solution of this problem. The Lord then suggested the deities a way to get back the full glory of heaven by churning the ocean and to consume the nectar that came out of the churning.

The deities accepted this path suggested by Lord Vishnu, but there was a problem in this solution that the churning of the ocean was not a matter of the gods alone, they needed to include the demons also in it. The gods agreed to this point of Narayan and together with the demons, they churned the ocean.

It is believed that apart from nectar from the churning of the ocean, Dhanvantari, Kalpavriksha, Kaustubh Mani, divine conch shell, Varuni or wine, Parijat tree, moon, Apsaras, Uchau-Shrava horse, Halahal or poison and Kamdhenu cow were also obtained. But there was a war between the gods and the demons for drinking nectar. With the help of Lord Vishnu, the gods won this battle and finally the gods were able to get the nectar.
