When Maharaj Yudhishthir expressed his desire to know from Lord Krishna about the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra (Phalgun according to Gujarat and Maharashtra) month, he said: 'Rajendra! I will tell you a sin-eliminating anecdote on this subject, which was told by Maharishi Lomash when Chakravarti King Mandhata asked him.
Mandhata asked: Lord! For the benefit of the people, I want to know in which name Ekadashi is observed in the Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month, what is its method and what is the result obtained from it. Please tell me all these things.
Lomashji said: Nripashrestha! It is a matter of the past. In a forest called Chaitrarath served by nymphs, where the daughters of the Gandharvas roam around playing musical instruments with their nymphs, an nymph named Manjughosha went to woo Munivar Meghavi. Maharishi Chaitrarath lived in the forest and practiced celibacy. Due to fear of Manjughosha Muni, she stopped a mile away from the ashram and started singing melodious songs while playing the veena beautifully. The great sage Meghavi went there while roaming around and seeing that beautiful nymph singing like this, he fell under the spell of fascination. Seeing the sage in such a state, Manju Ghosha came near him put down the veena, and started embracing him. Meghavi also started having fun with him. He was not even aware of night and day. Many days passed in this manner. Manjughosa got ready to go to heaven. While leaving he said to the wise sage Meghavi: 'Brahmin! Now allow me to go to my country.
Meghavi said: Goddess! until evening turns to morning
Stay with me till now.
Apsara said: Vipravar! I don't know how many evenings have gone by till now! Just consider the wine!
Lomashji said: Rajan! Meghavi was astonished to hear the words of Apsara. At that time he calculated the time passed and found out that he had been living with her for fifty-seven years. The sage became very angry at her after knowing that she was destroying his penance. He cursed and said: 'Sinful! You become a vampire.' Burnt by the sage's curse, she bowed down humbly and said: 'Vipravar! Please save me from my curse. One can become friends with good people just by speaking seven sentences or following seven steps together. Brahman! I have spent many years with you, so Swamin! Please be kind to me.'
The sage said: Bhadre! What should I do? You have ruined my great penance. Still, listen. The name of the Ekadashi that falls in Chaitra Krishna Paksha is ‘Papmochani’. She is the one who liberates from the curse and destroys all the sins. Beautiful! By fasting for the same, your vampirism will go away.
Saying this, Meghavi went to the ashram of his father Munivar Chyavan. Seeing him coming, Chyavan asked: 'Son! What have you done ? You have destroyed your virtue!'
Meghavi said: Father! I have earned the right to have fun with Apsara. Now please tell me some kind of atonement which can destroy the culprit.
Chyavan said: Son! By observing fast on 'Papmochani Ekadashi' which falls in Chaitra Krishna Paksha, the sins will be destroyed.
Hearing this statement from her father, Meghavi observed the fast. By this, his sins were destroyed and he again became full of penance. Similarly, Manjughosa also observed this great fast. By observing the fast of 'Papmochani', she was freed from the evil world and went to heaven as a great Apsara in divine form.
Lord Shri Krishna says:
Rajan! All the sins of the noble people who observe the fast of 'Papmochani Ekadashi' are destroyed. Reading and listening to this gives the result of donating thousands of cows. Mahapatakis who murder a Brahma, theft of gold, drink alcohol, and adultery with their Guru also become free from their sins by observing this fast. This fast is very virtuous.
