Scientists say that a rare species of giant tortoise, which was believed to have become extinct more than a century ago, is not actually the case. Genetic research has shown that a female turtle sample taken 3 years ago on one of the Galapagos Islands matches an extinct tortoise sample taken in 1906.
There have been indications that there may be other turtles of the same species on Fernandina Island, an ancient wildlife habitat in the Pacific Ocean. Scientists sequenced the genome of a 1906 specimen known as Chelonoidis fantasticus. Under this, the female tortoise found in 2019, named Fernanda, compared it with all living species of Galapagos giant tortoise.
According to the findings published in Communications Biology, they found that the samples of the two were both matching and different. Dr. Evelyn Jensen, head of research at Newcastle University's School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, said that only two turtles have been found on Fernandina Island. We saw that both are actually members of the same species and different from other Galapagos tortoises.
He said that it is really an exciting discovery that this species is not really extinct, it is still alive. Fernandina Island is an active volcano in the western part of the Galapagos Islands, observed by Charles Darwin in 1835.
The male turtle specimen used in the research was collected in 1906 by explorer Rollo Beck during an expedition by the California Academy of Sciences. Researchers believe that Fernanda, which was found in an isolated vegetation patch cut by a lava flow, is about 50 years old and has suffered a growth spurt. He is now being kept at the Galapagos National Park Turtle Center.
Dr. Jensen said other missions indicated at least two or three more turtles living on the island, giving hope that Fernanda may not be the last of its kind. We hope that Fernanda is not the 'end' of her species. If there are more Fernanda tortoises, a breeding program may begin to increase the population.
