In Indian Hindu culture, Bhadra period is considered an inauspicious period, during this period it is considered forbidden to do any auspicious work. If you do good work then there is a strong possibility of getting inauspicious results. It is said in Muhurta Martand –

“Iyam Bhadra Shubh-Karyeshu Aushura Bhavati” means Bhadra is inauspicious in good work. Sage Kashyap has also described Bhadra period as inauspicious and painful.

Na kuryat mangalam vistya jeevitarthi probably.

Kurvan agyastada kshipram tatsarvam nastam vrajet.

That is, a person who wants to spend his life happily should not do any auspicious work during Bhadra period. If you do such work even out of ignorance, then the fruit of the auspicious work will surely be destroyed.

According to the legend, who was Bhadra?

According to the legend, the name of the daughter of Lord Surya Dev and sister of Shani Dev is Bhadra. In the Bhavishya Purana, it is said that the natural form of Bhadra is very terrible, in order to control his fierce nature, Brahma ji gave him an important place of time calculation. It is said that Lord Brahma has given this boon to Bhadra that whoever does any auspicious / auspicious work during his time, Bhadra will surely trouble that person.

It is believed that to kill the demons, Bhadra was born with the mouth of Gardabha (donkey) and the long tail and three legs. Bhadra is a girl with dark complexion, long hair, big teeth and fierce form. As soon as she was born, Bhadra started creating obstacles in the yagyas and started creating nuisance in the auspicious works and started causing pain to the whole world. Seeing her evil nature, Sun God started worrying about her marriage and they started thinking that how will this wicked ugly girl get married? Everyone turned down the marriage proposal of Surya Dev. Then the Sun God sought proper advice from Brahma ji. Then Brahma ji said to Vishti that - you reside at the end of the karnas like Bhadre, Bav, Balava, Kaulav etc. You spoil their work. In this way, Brahma ji went to his world by giving sermons. Since then Bhadra started roaming in his own time giving trouble to all the beings.

That is why even in the present time, astrologers and elders of the house refuse to do auspicious work during Bhadra period. It has also been seen that whatever work is started during this period is either not completed or it is completed late.

What is the Bhadra period?

Muhurta has special importance in any auspicious work and for calculating the Muhurta, it is very important to have the harmony of the Panchang. The Panchang consists of Tithi, Vaar, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karan. The fifth part of the Panchang is "Karan". The first half of the date is called the first "Karan" and the second half of the date is called the second Karana. Thus it is clear that there are two Karanas in a Tithi. Whenever a Karan named Vishti comes in the date of thought, then that particular period is called “Bhadra”. Bhadra Namak Karana has special significance.

In the mythological text Muhurta Chintamani it is said that when:-

A. When the Moon is in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces, then Bhadra resides in the earth i.e. the planet of death.

B. When the Moon is in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Scorpio, then Bhadra resides in heaven.

C. When Moon is situated in Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius or Capricorn, Bhadra resides in Hades.

It is said that in whichever world Bhadra is seated, it is basically effective. Therefore, when the Moon is in transit in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces, then Bhadra will affect the earth. When Bhadra is on the planet Earth, then the period of Bhadra will be painful.

In the state of death, all works are destroyed.

Avoidance of Bhadra period. Avoidance of Bhadra

The Muhurta for Bhadra Parihar is said in Chintamani, Piyushdhara and Brahmyamal -

Diva Bhadra Ratrau Ratri Ratri Bhadra Yada Diva.

Na tatra bhadra dosha: syat sa bhadra bhadradayini.

That is, if the Bhadra of the day comes in the night and the Bhadra of the night comes in the day, then there is no fault of Bhadra. The fault of Bhadra does not occur on the earth. Such Bhadra is considered to give auspicious results.

Ratri Bhadra Yada Ahni Syat Diva Diva Bhadra Nishi.

Na tatra bhadra dosha: syat sa bhadra bhadradayini.

That is, when the night's Bhadra is in the day and the day's Bhadra comes in the night, then there is no Bhadra defect, this Bhadra gives auspicious results.

According to another opinion -

Tithe purvardhaja nightau day bhadra parardhaja.

That is, if there is an important work and it is necessary to do it and the Bhadra of the latter is in the day and the Bhadra of the first half is in the night, then it is considered auspicious. Ultimately it can be said that if at any time it is necessary to do auspicious work in Bhadra, then leaving the Bhadra and Bhadra Mukha-Kaal of Bhuloka, auspicious work can be done during the Bhadra period of Heaven and Hades, its result is auspicious.
