Why do we take only seven rounds [phere] in marriage?
Meaning of Panigrahan: - The ceremony of Panigrahan is commonly known as 'Marriage'. After acceptance of the rules and promises by the groom, the bride hands over her hand to the groom and the groom hands over his hand to the bride. In this way both embrace each other. Later, this ritual came to be called 'Kanyadaan'.
With the mantra written below, the girl should extend her hand towards the groom and the groom should hold it (entirely) along with his thumb. Feel that in a divine environment, you are accepting each other's responsibilities with a feeling of mutual friendship.
Om Yadaishi Manasa Dooram, Disho Nupvamano Va.
Hiranyapano vai karna, sa tva manmansa karotu asau. -Par.Gr.Su. 1.4.15
Meaning of marriage:- It is wrong to call marriage as marriage. There is no synonym for marriage. Marriage = Vi+vaah, hence its literal meaning is to bear responsibility (especially).
Marriage is a sacrament :-
In other religions, marriage is a kind of contract between husband and wife which can be broken in special circumstances, but in Hindu religion, marriage is a very well thought out ritual. In this ceremony, it is customary to take the consent of all parties including the bride and groom. In Hindu marriage, there is more spiritual relationship between husband and wife than physical relationship and this relationship is considered very sacred.

Seven rounds or Saptapadi: -
In Hindu religion, 16 sanskars are considered the most important parts of life. The marriage ceremony is not considered complete until 7 rounds are completed. Not one round less, not one more. In this process, both take 7 rounds which is also called 'Saptapadi'. These seven rounds or verses are taken with 7 words. Every round has a promise which the husband and wife promise to keep throughout their lives. These 7 rounds are the main pillars of stability of Hindu marriage. By taking 7 rounds of fire and keeping the Pole Star as witness, the two body, mind and soul get tied in a sacred bond.
Importance of number seven...
It is worth noting that in Indian culture, the number 7 is considered very special for human life. 7 notes of music, 7 colors of rainbow, 7 planets, 7 planes, 7 seas, 7 sages, seven worlds, 7 chakras, 7 horses of the sun, seven rays, seven metals, seven cities, 7 stars, seven islands, 7 days , 7 circumambulation of the temple or idol, etc. have been mentioned.
Similarly, there are 7 activities of life i.e. defecation, brushing teeth, bathing, meditation, eating, talking and sleeping. 7 types of greetings i.e. Mother, Father, Guru, God, Sun, Fire and Guest. Darshan of 7 things early in the morning - Gorochan, sandalwood, gold, conch, mridang, mirror and gem. 7 internal impurities – jealousy, hatred, anger, greed, attachment, hatred and evil thoughts. By removing the above impurities, we get these 7 specific benefits - happiness in life, peace, destruction of fear, protection from poison, increase in knowledge, strength and wisdom.
7 types of baths:-
Mantra bath, silent bath, fire bath, Vayavya bath, divine bath, Masag bath and mental bath. There are 7 metals in the body – juice, blood, flesh, fat, bone, pleasure and Venus. 7 virtues- faith, hope, charity, self-control, patience, justice, sacrifice. 7 sins- pride, greed, anger, lust, jealousy, laziness, overeating and 7 gifts of the soul- prudence, wisdom, devotion, knowledge, power, fear of God.
Keeping all this in mind, there is a tradition of taking 7 rounds of fire which is called 'Saptapadi'. Even in Vedic and mythological belief, the number 7 is considered complete. It is said that earlier 4 rounds were prevalent. According to belief, it was a symbol of the four stages of life – Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.
7 centers of energy:-
There are 7 centers of energy in our body which are called 'Chakras'. These 7 chakras are - Muladhara (at the starting point of the body), Swadhisthana (slightly above the anus), Manipura (navel center), Anahata (heart), Vishuddha (throat), Ajna (forehead, between the eyes) and Sahasrara. (At the top where the crest is the center).
Our 7 bodies are connected to the above 7 chakras. These 7 bodies are – gross body, subtle body, causal body, mental body, spiritual body, divine body and Brahma body.
In the Saptapadi of marriage, a provision is made to establish identification with those power centers and layers of existence or the deepest forms of the body. Both the bride and groom who get married are created to have a sense of dedication and trust in each other physically, mentally and spiritually.

'Maitri Saptapadin Muchyate' i.e. just by walking 7 steps together, a feeling of friendship is created even between two strangers, hence the dignity and importance of the first 7 steps has been accepted to ensure lifelong companionship. In the 7th step, the groom says to the bride, 'After walking 7 steps, we both will meet each other. Have become eat.
We each take 7 steps together as husband and wife on every plane of thought, speech and action.
