Mother Skandmata - The fifth day of Navratri
Goddess Skandmata is worshiped on the fifth day of Navratri. The meaning of the name of this form of the goddess, Skanda means Lord Kartikeya/Murugan and Mata means mother, hence her name means mother of Skanda.
Mother Skandmata
Mother Skandmata has four arms. The goddess holds a lotus in two hands, Kartikeya in one hand and Abhaya Mudra in one hand. Being seated on a lotus, one of the names of the goddess is Padmasana. Devotees get happiness and opulence by worshiping the mother. Worshiping the Goddess with a sincere heart also leads to salvation. This form of Goddess is also worshiped as Agni Devi. As Maa is the epitome of Mamta, she blesses the devotees with love.
Mythological beliefs
According to the beliefs, there was a demon named Tarakasur who used to do severe penance to please Brahmadev. One day the Lord, pleased with his penance, appeared before him. Then he asked for the boon of being immortal. Brahma ji explained to him that whoever has taken birth on this earth has to die. Then he thought that Shiva is an ascetic, so he will never get married. So thinking that he asked the Lord for a boon that he should be killed only by the son of Shiva. Brahma ji agreed with him and went away saying aastu. After that he started wreaking havoc all over the world and started killing people.
Tired of his tyranny, the gods reached Shiva and requested him to get married. Then he married Goddess Parvati and became the father of Kartikeya. When Lord Kartikeya grew up, he killed the demon Tarakasura and saved the people.
Goddess Skandmata controls the planet Mercury. Worshiping the Goddess reduces the bad effects of the planet Mercury.
