Chaitra Navami also known as Ram Navami is one of the most important festivals of Sanatan Dharma. This day is also celebrated as the birthday of Lord Shri Ram, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Maryada Purushottam Prabhu Shri Ram was born in Ayodhya on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month in the house of King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya of Raghukul.

The festival of Ramnavami is celebrated in a grand manner with great devotion and joy. During this time people observe fast, sing devotional songs, and offer pudding, pudding and fruit sweets etc. to the nine girls along with Lord Rama. Nine girls or just say little girls are considered to be the form of Maa Durga. On this day we also worship Goddess Siddhidatri.

Ram Navami 2022: Things to keep in mind

On this day, get up at Brahma Muhurta and take a bath in the Ganges river. However, if this is not possible, then add a little Ganges water to your bath water and take a bath with it.

After this worship Lord Rama and Goddess Durga. Worship of Goddess Durga because Lord Rama also worshiped Goddess Durga for victory in the battlefield.

On this day, feed the girls and send them off by giving them fruits and gifts.

Ram Navami 2022: Religious Story

According to the scriptures of Ramayana, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya lived with his three wives Kausalya, Kekai, and Sumitra during the Treta Yuga. During his reign Ayodhya had reached a period of great prosperity. However, in spite of all the prosperity, a great sorrow remained constant in the life of King Dasharatha. It was the sorrow of being childless. King Dasharatha had no children and therefore there was no heir to the throne in Raghukul.

One day he performed Putrakameshti Yagya on the suggestion of sage Vashistha to get the desired child. This yajna was performed by a very holy saint Rishi Rishishringa. As a result of this yajna, Agnidev appeared in front of King Dasharatha and presented him with a bowl of divine Kheer/payasam.

He asked King Dasharatha to distribute the kheer among his three wives. In such a situation, King Dasharatha obeyed the order and gave half the kheer to his elder wife Kaushalya and half of the kheer to his second wife Kekai. Both these queens also gave some part of their kheer to Queen Sumitra.

On the ninth day i.e. Navami Tithi in the month of Chaitra, Kaushalya gave birth to Rama, Kekai gave birth to Bharata and Sumitra gave birth to Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Since then the tradition of celebrating this day as Ram Navami started with great enthusiasm all over the world.

Ram Navami 2022: Do's and Don'ts

Wake up before sunrise and take bath in the Ganges river. If this is not possible, then you can put a little Ganga water in the bathing water itself. By this all the sins of your previous birth will surely be washed away.

Worship Lord Rama.

On this day, feed the girls and give fruits and gifts.

Offer things like red chunri, red clothes, makeup items, and halwa puri to Mata Rani. Doing so brings good luck.

Place mango leaves at the main entrance of the house.

It is advised to stay away from anger and cruelty on this day.

Do not consume alcohol or any kind of tamasic food.

Maintain a peaceful atmosphere at home.

It is extremely auspicious to maintain celibacy during this period.

Taurus - Offer white colored Rasgulla to Lord Rama and Maa Durga.

Leo - Offer Moti Chur laddus or Bael fruit to Lord Rama and Mother Durga.

Virgo - Offer green colored fruits to Lord Rama and Maa Durga.

Libra - Offer cashew katli sweets to Lord Rama and Maa Durga.

Scorpio - Offer pudding-puri to Lord Rama and Maa Durga.

Chaitra Navratri is celebrated when Navami Tithi is over and Dashami Tithi prevails. As mentioned in our scriptures, Chaitra Navratri fasting has been done from Pratipada to Navami Tithi and to follow this guideline, Chaitra Navratri fasting is mandatory for the entire Navami Tithi.
