Dev Diwali Story 

According to the legend, Lord Shiva's elder son Kartikeya had killed Tarakasura. Tarakasura's three sons Tarakaksh, Kamalaksh, and Vidyunmali took a vow to avenge their father's death. These three were known as Tripurasura. All three of them pleased Lord Brahma by performing rigorous penance and asked him for the boon of immortality, but Lord Brahma refused to grant them this boon.

Brahma ji gave a boon to Tripurasura that when the three Puris created would be in a row in Abhijit Nakshatra and the one riding the impossible chariot would try to kill him with an impossible arrow, then only he would die. After this, the terror of Tripurasur increased. After this, Shambhu himself resolved to kill Tripurasura.

Relation of Dev Diwali with Kashi and the killing of Tripurasura:

According to the scriptures, a demon named Tripurasura had created terror, due to which the gods along with the sages were greatly troubled. In such a situation, all the gods came to Lord Shiva and asked him to find a solution to this problem. God made the earth a chariot, the Sun and Moon became wheels, the Creator became the charioteer, Lord Vishnu became the arrow, Vasuki became the string of the bow and Mount Meru became the bow. Then Lord Shiva rode on that impossible chariot, mounted an arrow on the impossible bow, and attacked Tripurasura. After this, Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura on the day of Kartik Purnima, and then all the gods and goddesses reached Kashi happily. Since then Shiva is also called Tripurari. Where he went and celebrated by lighting the lamp. In the happiness of this, all the gods reached Kashi, the city of Lord Shiva. Then after bathing in Ganga, celebrated by donating lamps. Method of worship

On the evening of Dev Diwali, fill 5, 11, 21, 51, or 108 lamps with ghee or mustard during the Pradosh period. After this, go to the river ghat and remember the Gods and Goddesses. Then after offering vermilion, kumkum, akshat, turmeric, flowers, sweets, etc. in the lamp, light the lamp. After this, if you want, you can also flow it into the river.

On the day of Dev Diwali, wake up before sunrise and take a bath. If possible, take a bath in the Ganga. If you are not able to go for a Ganga bath, then add some Ganga water to the bathing water. By doing this you will get results equivalent to taking a bath in the Ganges. After this, offer Arghya to the Sun God by putting water, vermilion, Akshat, and red flowers in a copper pot. Then worship other gods and goddesses along with Lord Shiva. Offer flowers, garland, white sandalwood, Dhatura, Aak flower, and Belpatra to Lord Shiva. In the end, light a lamp of ghee and dhoor and perform the aarti as per the chalisa, hymns, and recitation of mantras.
