In most parts of the country, there is a tradition of donating lamps in the name of 'Yam'. Two days before Diwali, a blank clay lamp is taken in the evening of Dhanvantari-Trayodashi. They put sesame oil in it and place a new cotton wick and then light it and dedicate it to Yama, the god of death, facing south. After that it is kept on a pile of grains next to the door. The effort is to keep it burning throughout the night and not extinguish it. Why do we light this lamp? What is its secret? There is an interesting and beautiful Puranic story in this regard.
It is said that long ago there was a great king named Hansraj. Once he went hunting in the forest with his friends, soldiers, and bodyguards. Coincidentally, the king got separated from everyone and was left alone and while wandering, he reached the kingdom of another king Hemraj.
Hemraj gave a grand welcome to the tired Hansraj. The same night a son was born to Hemraj. On this happy occasion, Hemraj kept Hansraj at his place for a few days with the request to attend the royal festival. A strange incident happened on the child's sixth birthday. At the time of puja, the goddess appeared and said – Today, this child, who is being celebrated so much, will die on the fourth day of his marriage.
Due to this prophecy, there was mourning in the entire kingdom. A thunderbolt struck Hemraj and his family. Everyone was stunned. At this time of grief, Hansraj consoled King Hemraj and his family - Friend, do not get upset even a bit. I will protect this child. No power in the world will be able to tame it.
Hansraj built an underground fort on the banks of Yamuna and made arrangements for the upbringing of the prince inside it. Apart from this, to save the life of the prince, Hansraj had also made arrangements for many tantric rituals, yagya, mantra chanting, etc. from qualified Brahmins. Gradually the prince grew young. The news of her beauty and brilliance spread everywhere. On the advice of King Hansraj, Hemraj also married the prince. The princess to whom the prince was married looked like Lakshmi in person. No one had ever seen such a beautiful bride and groom pair in their life.
The ritual of marriage... On the fourth day of the marriage, the messengers of Yama arrived to take away the life of the prince. Right now only Manglik celebrations are going on in the state. The royal family and the people were busy celebrating. prince Seeing the image of Mara and the princess, the Yamdoots also got disturbed, but they had to do the unpleasant task of taking the life of the prince.
When the Yamdoot took away the life of the prince, there was such an outcry and such a terrible scene that even the messengers themselves were moved and started crying.
After some time of this incident, one day Yamraj asked his messengers in a happy mood - Messengers! All of you have been killing the living beings of the earth since eternity, have you ever felt pity for any living being and the thought arose in your mind that it should be spared?
Yama's messengers started looking at each other. Sensing his hesitation, Yamraj encouraged him - Don't hesitate, if such an incident has come, then tell it fearlessly.
At this, an angel bowed his head and requested - Mrityudev, such incidents have rarely happened but one incident has definitely happened, the memory of which makes me nervous even today. Saying this, the messenger narrated the incident of the murder of Hemraj's son. Even Yamraj was disturbed by this sad incident. Aiming at him the messenger said – Nath! Is there no way to save living beings from this type of untimely death?
On this, Yamraj said that life and death are the unchangeable rules of the universe and it cannot be changed, but fasting for the whole day on Dhanteras and taking a bath in Yamuna, and worshiping Dhanvantari and Yam can prevent untimely death. Even if this is not possible, a lamp in the name of Yama should be lit at the entrance of the house in the evening. With this, a life free from untimely death and disease can be achieved.
Since then, there is a tradition of worshiping Dhanvantari and lighting the Yama lamp at the entrance on the day of Dhanteras.
