Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month is known as Utpana Ekadashi. It is believed that by observing this fast a person gets freedom from the sins of his previous birth.

Yudhishthir asked -

Lord! How did the Punyamayi Ekadashi date come into existence? Why was it considered sacred in this world? And how did it become dear to the gods?

Shri Bhagwan said how Punyamayi Ekadashi date came into existence:

Kuntinandan! It is a matter of ancient times, in Satyayuga there lived a demon named Mur. He was very wonderful, extremely fierce and terrifying for all the gods. That evil spirit in the form of time, Mahasur had conquered Indra also. All the gods were defeated by him and were driven out of heaven and roamed the earth in doubt and fear. One day all the gods went to Mahadevji. There Indra explained the entire situation of the gods to Lord Shiva.

Indra said -

Maheshwar ! These gods have been corrupted from heaven and are wandering on earth. They don't look good living among humans. Deb! Please suggest some solution. Whose support should the gods take?

Mahadevji said -

Devraj. Go there, where Lord Garudadhwaj, the one who gives shelter to all, who is ready to protect all, who gives shelter to the world, who is ready to protect all, the Lord of the world, who is ready to protect all, is present. He will protect you all. Lord Shri Krishna says - Yudhishthir! Hearing the words of Mahadevji, the most intelligent Devraj Indra went there along with all the gods. Lord Gadadhar was sleeping in the waters of Kshirsagar. After seeing him, Indra folded his hands and started praising him.

Indra said-

Devdeveshwar! Greetings to you.. Both gods and demons worship you. Pundarikaksh! You are the enemy of demons. Madhusudan! Please protect us. Jagannath! All the gods have come to your refuge in fear of the demon named Mur.

Devotee! Save us. Devdeveshwar! Save us. Janardan! Protect us, protect us. Kamalnayan who destroys demons! Protect us. Lord! We all have come near you. Have taken refuge in you. Lord! Help the gods who have taken refuge. God ! You are the husband, you are the mind, you are the doer and you are the reason. You are the mother of all people and you are the father of this world. , Lord! Devdeveshwar! Sharanagatvatsal! God . Frightened they have come to you for refuge. Lord! A demon named Mur, who is very powerful and has a very fierce nature, has defeated all the gods and expelled them from heaven.

After listening to Indra, Lord Vishnu said - 'Devraj! What kind of demon is that? What is his form and strength and where is the place of residence of that evil person?"

Indra said-

Deveshwar! In ancient times, a great demon named Taljungh was born in the lineage of Brahmaji, who was very fearsome. His son became famous by the name of demon Mur. He is also very fervent, very brave and terrible for the gods. There is a famous city named Chandravati, he resides there after making a place in it. That demon has defeated all the gods and thrown them out of heaven. He has appointed another Indra on the throne of heaven. He has also created others like Ani, Moon, Sun, Vayu and Varun. Janardan! I am telling you everything. He has done everything else. He has deprived the gods from every place.

Lord Janardan became very angry after hearing Indra's statement. He went to Chandravati Puri along with the gods. The gods saw that the demon king was roaring again and again; Defeated by him, all the gods ran away in ten directions. Now the demon looked at Lord Vishnu and said, 'Stand, stand.' Hearing his challenge, God's eyes turned red with anger. He said- 'Oh wicked demon! Look at these arms of mine. Saying this, Shri Vishnuji started killing the evil demons who had come in front of him with his divine arrows. The demons became distraught with fear. Pandunandan! After that, Shri Vishnuji attacked the demon army with Chakra. Hundreds of warriors lost their lives and fell to their deaths. After this Lord Madhusudan went to Badarika Ashram. There was a cave named Sinhavato, which was twelve yojanas long. Pandu- Nandan. There was only one door in that cave. Lord Vishnu was sleeping in it. The demon Mur was busy in killing the Lord. He kept following them. After reaching there he also entered the same cave. He felt very happy to see God sleeping there. He thought, 'This is a god who gives fear to the demon. Therefore, without any doubt, I will kill him. As soon as the demon Yudhishtra thought like this, a girl appeared from the body of Lord Vishnu, who was very beautiful, fortunate and equipped with divine weapons. She was born from a part of God's glory. His strength and bravery were great. Yudhisthira ! Demon king Mur looked at that girl. The girl, thinking of war, requested for a war with the demon. War broke out. The girl was adept in all types of martial arts. That great demon named Mur was reduced to ashes just by his roar. God woke up after the demon was killed. Seeing the demon lying on the ground, he asked - 'This enemy of mine was very fierce and fierce, who has killed him?'

The girl said -

Mistress! With your Prasad, I have killed this great demon.

Lord's Krishana blessing to Kalyani:

Kalyani ! Due to this action of yours, all the three worlds The sages and gods are happy! Therefore, according to your interest, ask for a boon from me; Even if God is rare, I will give you that boon, there is no doubt about it.

That girl was actually Ekadashi. He said, 'Lord. If you are happy, then by your grace I should become the chief goddess in all the places of pilgrimage, the destroyer of all vibrations and the giver of all kinds of attainments. Janardan! Those who will fast on my day with devotion towards you, may they attain all kinds of achievements. Madhav! You grant wealth, religion and salvation to those who observe my fast by fasting, sacrificing or offering food.

Shri Vishnu said- Kalyani! Whatever you say will be fulfilled.

Lord Shri Krishna says that on Ekadashi date, there should not be any difference between Shukla and Krishna:

Yudhisthira ! Mahavrata Ekadashi was very happy after getting such a boon. Ekadashi of both the parties is equally beneficial. There should be no distinction between Shukla and Krishna in this. If there is a little Ekadashi in Udayakalab, complete Dwadashi in the middle and some Trayodashi in the end, then it is called 'Trisprusha' Ekadashi. He is very dear to God. If one observes fast on Trisprusha Ekadashi, then one gets the result of one thousand Ekadashi fasts and similarly, if one observes fast on Dwadashi, the result is considered to be a thousand fold. Ashtami, Ekadashi, Shashthi, Tritiya and Chaturdashi - if these are known from earlier dates then one should not fast on them. There is a rule of fasting in these only when it coincides with Parvartini Tithi. If on the first day there is Ekadashi during the day as well as at night and on the second day there is only one Dand Ekadashi in the morning, then one should leave the first date and fast only on the Ekadashi consisting of Dwadashi of the second day. I have told this method for Ekadashi of both the parties. The person who fasts on Ekadashi goes to Vaikuntha Dham, where Lord Garudadhwaja resides in person. The person who recites the greatness of Ekadashi all the time and donates a cow on Ekadashi gets the reward of the virtue of thousands of cows. Those who listen to this Mahatya with devotion during the day or night, are undoubtedly freed from the sins of Brahmahatya etc. There is no other sin-killing fast like Ekadashi.
