Maa Katyayani - Sixth day of Navratri

Katyayani Mata is worshiped on the sixth day of Navratri. Goddess Parvati took this form to kill the demon named Mahishasura. This form of mother is considered to be quite violent, hence mother Katyayani is also called the goddess of war.

Mother Katyayani's Form

Mother Katyayani rides a lion. She has four arms, in the left two hands she holds a lotus and a sword, while in her right two hands she holds a varada and abhaya mudra. The goddess is getting adorned in red clothes.

Mythological beliefs

According to mythological beliefs, Goddess Katyayani gave birth to Katyayan Rishi, hence her name Katyayani. It is also mentioned in many places that she is the incarnation of Goddess Shakti and Katyayan Rishi first worshiped her, hence her name Katyayani.

When a demon named Mahishasura had created a ruckus in the whole world, then Goddess Katyayani killed him and freed the universe from his tyranny. A fierce battle took place between the goddess and the demon Mahishasura, equipped with swords and weapons. After that, as soon as the goddess got closer to him, she took the form of a buffalo. After this the goddess severed his neck from the torso with her sword. Because of killing Mahishasura, the goddess is called Mahishasura Mardini.

Goddess Katyayani controls the planet Jupiter. The evil effects of Jupiter are reduced by worshiping the Goddess.
