Who is Vasu, know his life introduction: -
The meaning of the word 'Vasu' is 'one who dwells' or 'resident'. Earth is also called Vasundhara. Like the 8 substances, there are 8 Vasus. They are also called 'Ashta Vasu'. These eight godbrothers are considered the protector gods of Indra and Vishnu. All are born from Daksha Kanya and Dharma's wife Vasu. One of the Daksha girls was also Sati, who was the wife of Shiva. Sati took second birth as Parvati. According to Skanda Purana, the fingers of the hands of Mahishasura Mardini Durga were created from the radiance of the eight Vasus.
The story of the origin of the Vasus: -
Dyo, the youngest of the 8 Vasus, one day out of greed stole Vashishtha's cow, Nandini. When Vashishtha came to know, he cursed the eight Vasus to be born in human form. On apologizing to the Vasus, Vashishtha reduced the duration of the curse of the 7 Vasus to only one year. Vasu named 'Dyo' had abducted his Dhenu under the seduction of his wife, so he was asked to live in human form for a long time and not to produce children, to be a great scholar and hero, and to abandon women's enjoyment. According to this curse, he was born from the womb of Shantanu's wife Ganga. 7th was thrown into the water by Ganga, and 8th was Bhishma who was saved. But apart from this, the story before his birth in human form is ancient.
Names of 8 Vasus in Vedas and Puranas: -
Their different names are found in the Vedas and Puranas. The names of 8 Vasus in Skanda, Vishnu, and Harivansh Puranas are as follows:- 1. You, 2. Dhruva, 3. Som, 4. Dhar, 5. Anil, 6. Anal, 7. Pratyush and 8. Prabhash. According to Bhagavata Purana – Drona, Prana, Dhruva, Arka, Agni, Dosha, Vasu, and Vibhavasu
Might, boon, and curse of the Vasus: -
It was the Vasus who killed Shumbha, the follower of the Jalandhar demon. According to the Padma Purana, Vasugana was present at the sacrifice of Daksha and fought on the side of Indra in the war against Hiranyaksha. In Bhagwat, there is a description of his war with Kalkeyas. According to a legend, Vasu once had to suffer pregnancy due to the curse of the patriarch, as a result, he went to Narmadatir and did severe penance for 12 years. After penance, Lord Shankar gave him a boon. Thereafter the Vasus established the same Shivling and proceeded toward heaven.
